Lenton Reading; The History of The Pretzel

Pretzel reading

The pretzel is a symbol of arms folded in prayer. The history of this custom: During Lent the early Christians fasted. They ate only fish, vegetables, and bread made from flour and water. One of the breads they made was called “Bracellae” (bra SEL eye) which shaped in the form of arms folded in prayer. Use of these “breads” spread. The name was changed to “Pretzel” as we call it today.

The early Christians placed a small pretzel beside each plate at meal times as a visible reminded of the need for prayer. For many years pretzels were a symbol of prayer for Lent.

Scripture Luke 11:1-4

Thoughts on Prayer: Prayer that reforms and heals is the absolute faith that all things are possible to God. What are our motives for prayer? Do we pray to try to instruct God who already knows all? Do we pray to be heard by others? We do not need to use a lot of words nor flowery phrases to pray. God already knows all, and is all. Jesus was most concerned that we talk with God as we would with a friend. You can pray in different positions. You may be standing, sitting, kneeling, or lying down. Some people always kneel. Others sit;; most bow their heads; many fold their hands. Any position can be right. It is the attitude that counts. It is the desire to pray that matters. Desire is prayer. Thoughts unspoken are not unknown to God. God is love. Can we ask God to be more? God is intelligence. Can we inform God of anything he does not already know? Are we grateful for all that we already have when we ask for more? You can tell God everything. God is interested in everything. God is already perfect and our prayers can bring us into right relationship with God. Our relationship with God needs attention every day. If you leave God out of your life for many days, you will become distant strangers. Take time to pray each day.

WE CAN GET THE SMALL KIDS INVOLVED IN SERVICE BY ASKING THEM TO PASS OUT THE PRETZELS AS PRAYER REMINDERS WITH THESE WORDS AS AN INSERT.

PRAYER

We beg you, O Lord, to bless these breads which are to remind us that Lent is a sacred season of penance and prayer. For this very reason, the early Christians started the custom of making these breads in the form of arms crossed in prayer. Thus they kept the holy purpose of Lent alive in their hearts from day to day, and increased in their souls the love of Christ, even unto death, if necessary.

Grant us, we pray, that we too, may be reminded by the daily sight of these pretzels to observe the holy season of Lent with true devotion and great spiritual fruit. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
